What is Lumen?

Lumen is a device-to-app metabolic health coach that measures your metabolism through your breath to help you make the right choices for your body. It reveals if you are burning fats or carbs in real-time based on the CO2% in your breath and provides insights into how nutrition, sleep, exercise, and stress affect your metabolic health. Lumen serves up daily tailored nutrition plans and lifestyle recommendations based on your unique metabolic profile, so you can make high-impact changes.

The benefits of measuring your metabolism

Knowing whether you’re burning carbs or fats for fuel can help you understand and improve your metabolic flexibility – how efficiently your mitochondria, your cells’ powerhouses, switch between carb and fat burn to support your body’s needs.

Improving your metabolic flexibility can have many health benefits, including:

  • Easier weight management

  • Optimized athletic performance

  • Higher energy levels

  • Improved sleep

  • Metabolic syndrome prevention

  • Longevity

Metabolic flexibility and sustainable weight loss

Many people overlook the foundation of metabolic flexibility when it comes to long-term weight loss and feeling better in their bodies. This is why 80% of individuals will regain the weight they lose from traditional diets.

Healthy mitochondria use fats for energy during rest, fasting, or low-intensity aerobic exercise, and quickly shift to carb burn after eating or when you need an energy boost. This efficient energy production supports overall health, weight management, and well-being. Lumen is designed to address lifestyle factors that promote mitochondrial health and metabolic flexibility, making it easier to sustain weight loss over time.

Innovative, individualized, and data-driven solutions that empower both practitioners and patients to improve metabolic health.

Can Lumen be
combined with GLP-1s?

Lumen’s personalized nutrition plans, tailored for GLP-1 patients, include high-quality carbohydrates and increased protein intake, in accordance with ADA recommendations.

Combining Lumen’s meal plans, macro tracking, and
metabolic coaching with GLP-1 treatment allows you to make lifestyle changes that address weight issues, so you can get more out of GLP-1s.

It’s a synergistic effect, as Lumen is the ideal companion to improve your metabolism. Even after coming off GLP-1 medication, Lumen can help you continue to progress in a healthy and sustainable way.

What do the Lumen levels mean?

Lumen levels reflect which fuel sources the body is using for energy in that moment (fats, carbs or somewhere in between).
The lower the level, the higher the amount of fat that is being utilized for energy (Level 1 is close to an RER of 7). The higher the level, the less fat and more carbs being used for energy (Level 5 is close to an RER of 1.0).
The levels translate to the following:

LUMEN LEVEL 1  |  84% - 100% Fat Burn

Burning fat for energy.

LUMEN LEVEL 2  |  63% - 84% Fat Burn

Burning mostly fat for energy.

LUMEN LEVEL 3  |  42% - 63% Fat Burn

Burning both fats and carbs for energy.

LUMEN LEVEL 4  |  60% - 80% Carb Burn

Burning mostly carbs for energy.

LUMEN LEVEL 5  |  80% - 100% Carb Burn

Burning mostly carbs for energy.

When should you receive high/low scores?

View this article for details.

The TLDR; you want to strive for:

Morning

Upon waking. Most important and only required measurement of the day.

Ending a Fast

Continue fast through the morning to a decreased score or level 1 or 2.

After a Meal

Increased Lumen levels up to 2 hours post-meal.

After a Workout

Decreased Lumen levels
about 1 hour post-workout.

Result Explanations

A quick guide to your Lumen results.

Higher Lumen levels than expected

There are many reasons you may have a higher Lumen level. First and foremost, metabolic flexibility takes time. If you are just getting started, it is common you may have higher levels in the morning.
View this article.

Reasons you may see an elevated Lumen Level:

ELEVATED HEART RATE: measurement must be conducted at a resting HR. If elevated 10% above rested HR, it may impact results.

STRESS / SLEEP: Stress and poor quality sleep will trigger the body’s fightor-flight response, elevating stress hormone levels, primarily cortisol and epinephrine.

POST-WORKOUT: Increased levels means the did not wait long enough afterwards to take your measurement OR you were fasted during a high intensity workout, leading to Gluconeogenesis.

POST-MEAL: High levels after a particularly low-carb meal is likely due to a high protein intake. This will cause an increase in blood sugar and insulin response.

FASTING: To determine which reason applies to you, you will need to take the carb consumption of the previous 3-4 days into consideration.
Here are the details on why your fasting levels may be higher.

Lower Lumen levels than expected

Metabolic inflexibility can also be illustrated by only lower Lumen levels. If you struggles to reach carb burn, focus on the importance of boost days as you train your metabolism.

Reasons you may see unexplained low scores:

OVER-CONSUMING CARBS: eating significantly over the macros, but still receiving low morning levels means the additional carbs are stored in the form of glycogen in liver and muscle tissue.

TAKEN TOO SOON: Ensure post-meal measurements are 60-120 mins after eating. You can continue to test up to 120 mins post meal to identify an increase. Some individuals take longer than others.

TOO HIGH IN FAT CONTENT: meal must be low in fat in order to trigger higher Lumen levels.

NOT ENOUGH HIGH-QUALITY CARBS: a boost meal should include 4-5 servings of carbs to see an increase in levels.

HIGH FIBER CONTENT: this may delay elevations.
