Step 1: Registering for the Program

The first step in the DUI Safety & Treatment Program is registration. Participants can register by phone at 681-265-1693 or in person at one of our convenient locations:

  • Kanawha City Office (Charleston) – Located beside United Bank

  • St. Albans Office – Serving participants throughout the St. Albans area and surrounding communities

What to bring:

  • Driver’s License or ID

  • Insurance card

During registration, you will also pay your program fee, which varies depending on your required level of treatment (Level I–III). This fee covers your coursework, initial drug screen, and the program workbook.

Step 2: Substance Abuse Assessment

Once registered, participants schedule an individual substance abuse assessment. This evaluation determines the appropriate level of treatment—Level I, II, or III—based on factors such as:

  • Blood alcohol concentration (BAC) at the time of arrest

  • Number of prior offenses

  • Age and circumstances of the DUI

  • Drug-related arrests

This assessment ensures each participant receives a program tailored to their needs.

Step 3: Initial Drug Screen

Before starting the coursework, all participants complete an initial drug screen. Passing this is required to move forward in the program.

Additional or random drug screens may be required throughout the course to ensure compliance and accountability.

Step 4: Coursework and Group Sessions

The heart of the program is the 18-hour DUI Safety & Treatment coursework, offered in two formats:

  • Accelerated Track: 6-hour group session once a week for three consecutive weeks

  • Standard Track: 3-hour group session once a week for six consecutive weeks

The program uses the Responsible Decisions Workbook, which provides practical guidance on making safer choices and understanding the consequences of impaired driving.

During coursework, participants may also complete a post-test and a second random urinalysis to monitor progress.

Step 5: Levels of Treatment

The program has three levels, depending on the participant’s needs:

Level I – $485

  • 18-hour DUI Safety & Treatment Program

  • Initial drug screen

  • Responsible Decisions Workbook

Level II – $985

  • Level I inclusions

  • Substance Abuse Evaluation

  • 6 additional group counseling sessions required by the state

Level III – $1,885

  • Level II inclusions

  • 12 additional individual counseling hours required by the state

Participants may also choose additional therapy sessions at discounted rates, depending on their recovery plan or as required due to failed drug screens.

Step 6: Completing the Program

After finishing coursework and required counseling, participants schedule a final assessment. Upon successful completion:

  • A certificate of completion is issued

  • Your packet is mailed to the WV DMV

  • You may receive additional guidance on continuing recovery if needed

It’s important to note: failing a drug screen or breathalyzer may result in advancement to a higher treatment level and additional fees.
